Your legacy doesn’t begin someday. It is already unfolding.

Poet Mary Oliver asked:

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

At Latinas of Legacy, we believe every woman deserves the chance to explore that question.

We often talk about legacy as something we leave behind when life is over. But legacy is also what we create right now: through our choices, relationships, faith, work, courage, and the ways we show up for others.

Honor what you’ve inherited, and question it

You don’t have to be famous, hold a title, preach from a pulpit, write a book, or lead an organization. Your life is already influencing someone. The question is whether you’re living that influence with intention, and whether it helps make a more just world possible.

As Latinas, many of us have inherited extraordinary gifts from the women before us: faith, culture, wisdom, creativity, determination, and a deep commitment to family and community.

We have also inherited expectations, silences, wounds, and ways of thinking that deserve to be questioned.

Honoring our ancestors doesn’t mean repeating everything they did. Sometimes the most faithful choice is to preserve what gave them life and refuse to pass along what caused them harm.

Mujerista theology teaches us to take lo cotidiano, our everyday lived experience, seriously. It is a place where moral insight, theological wisdom, and liberating action emerge. Living our legacy means taking seriously both what we’ve received and what we choose to create together.

The Legacy Journey

Explore these six dimensions of intentional legacy living.

1. Remember Your Roots

What have you inherited?
Reflect on the people, places, traditions, and stories that shaped you. Whose sacrifices made your opportunities possible? What wisdom and stories deserve to be preserved and told?

2. Reclaim Your Voice

What have you been afraid to say?
Many Latinas have learned to make themselves smaller, stay silent, or wait for permission. Your perspective, your questions, and your story matter. Where is your voice needed in this season of your life?

3. Discern Your Calling

 What is yours to do?
Calling isn’t limited to religious leadership or ministry. It can show up in caregiving, teaching, art, organizing, advocacy, business, friendship, and countless other ways. What stirs your spirit? What injustices trouble you? What gifts are waiting to be used?

4. Heal What Shouldn’t be Handed Down

What cycles are you ready to interrupt?
Not every inheritance deserves another generation. You can love your family and community while naming what needs to change. What would wholeness look like for you and for those who come after you?

5. Live with Courage and Intention

How do your choices reflect your values?
A meaningful legacy is built through everyday decisions and shared commitments. What injustice are you willing to name? Where might God be inviting you to act with others for change?

6. Make room for those coming after you

Who are you making space for?
Legacy is never only about us. Who are you mentoring, encouraging, or teaching? How can your experience become wisdom and possibility for the next generation?

From personal legacy to proyecto histórico

We don’t build our legacies alone. The freedom we seek for ourselves is bound up with the freedom of our neighbors, and our stories belong to larger histories of struggle and possibility.

Mujerista theology invites us to move from reflection to praxis: to name what diminishes human dignity and to help build communities where people can flourish.

So don’t only ask, “What will people remember about me?”

Also ask, “What will be different because we lived, organized, loved, resisted, and made room for one another?”
